What is Gaffer/Duct/Cloth Tape?

The product commonly know as 'Gaffer Tape' has been around for many years, it is a self-adhesive tape made from layers of fine cloth woven together and coated with adhesive. The product often goes under other names including Duct Tape, Cloth Tape and some Trade Mark brand names. The variation in its name can sometimes tell you more about the product itself.

Gaffer Tape - This is generally a term used in the Arts & Entertainment Industry and usually suggests a good quality 'gaffer tape' which is durable, easy to tear and long lasting.

Duct Tape - This often refers to a more 'Economy Grade' of Gaffer/Duct/Cloth Tape. Reason being 'Duct Tape' is often used as the name would suggest for Ducting and mainly in large quantities. Being used in such volumes often results in the product being of lesser quality to save on cost.

Cloth Tape - This term usually involves the higher end of the Gaffer/Duct/Cloth Tape scale. Cloth Tapes usually have much higher cloth content when compared to Gaffer Tape and especially Duct Tape. Cloth Tapes are also usually very durable and designed more for the 'Industrial' application.
